You may have heard me mention that I will not be back at my school next year. If you want to go here, you can see part of my story for how long I searched for this job and finally got the one I have. But, because I was hired after August, I was not guaranteed a contract for the following school year. It's bittersweet for me. This was my true "first" class. They were MINE - all the trials and tribulations, the whole class which wavered throughout the year from 18 to 16 to 17 to 19 students. All 19 students, even those in Special Education and those being retained, they all made strides this year. At times it took others to point out to me just how great their gains were and how much I actually had to do with it. While I was searching for end of the year items, I came across this. I related, having lived in NYC 5 years ago. However, I decided to write my own version. No matter where I go, and no matter how long it may take me to find another teaching job - I AM a teacher!
Oh Sydney - I'm so sorry. I'll be praying that you find another teaching job soon. Keep us updated.
ReplyDeleteI love the "I AM a Teacher" poem... it is so so true! I'm so sorry that you're one of the many that are being let go... there's another job out there waiting for your wonderful attitude and dedication to the profession. I'll be thinking about you!
ReplyDeleteWell, said! It brought happy tears to my eyes. You'll always remember your first class. Teaching children touches your life in more ways than any teacher prep course could ever prepare you for. Thank you for dedicating yourself towards helping others.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you'll find another classroom where you can touch the lives of children again.
I love your poem. Goodluck with the job search.

WOW! I love your poem! :)
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if I could borrow and use it for inspiration. If it is too personal I certainly would not take your writing without permission. I just think it is too heartfelt and lovely not to share with others :) Thank you so much for posting this. I can certainly tell you were called to teaching and your students are blessed to have you!
=) Beth
